2022 Anime Retrospective (Part 2)

Kunoichi Tsubaki no Mune no Uchi

Many people say this was CloverWorks’ weakest anime of the year. I disagree wholeheartedly. It’s nothing magnificent. But I still had a lot of laughs and fun with the characters.

Grade: B

Lycoris Recoil

As some people like to bash Demon Slayer for being all about flashy visuals and nothing else, Lyrocris Recoil fits that description way more. I can’t deny it’s pretty to look at. Nevertheless, there was nothing of substance to latch onto.

Grade: C-

Machikado Mazoku: 2-choume

I wasn’t quite on board with it in the first season, but now I’m officially a fan. Something just clicked with the season that I didn’t with the previous one.

Grade: A-

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Still tugs at my soul with its brutal story and characters. Faputa‘s story alone made me almost cry.

Grade: A-

Mob Psycho III

Grade: A-

Otome Game Sekai wa Mob ni Kibishii Sekai desu

There’s only so much gaming otaku pandering I can handle. This one was just too much. Not to mention none of the characters were likable in any way.

Grade: C-

Ousama Ranking

This could have been great, but the 2nd half wasn’t as good. It lost me with where the plot was going and certain character plot points. But I still think the relationship between the protagonist and Kage carried this anime for me.

Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan: Super Extra

I didn’t think I would have to talk about this series again. Well, it’s more of the first season, except somehow even more brain-dead stupid. Not terrible, though. There are some funny moments, but that’s all it has going for it.

Grade: C+

Renai Flops

At first, I was going to drop this by episode 3 or 4. Then I read how it does a complete turnaround in the 2nd half. While it is an interesting twist to this harem story, it didn’t make it any better. If anything, it made it jarring and desperate to differentiate from the harem genre.

Grade: C

Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita. r=1-sinθ (Heart)

I look forward to a new season just to see more Ayame Himuro. She truly makes this anime watchable.

Grade: B+

Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii

I saw Maid + Dark Skin, and I immediately watched. I didn’t care how vapid it was. I was in awe of her beauty.

Grade: B-

Shadows House 2nd Season

Continues to offer great characters and drama that inflicts them. I’m still in awe of how stylized it is too.

Grade: B+

Grade: B+

Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou, Murabito A ni Tensei suru

Easily the worst isekai AND anime of the year I finished. Every character is copied and pasted, especially the main character, who is another Kirito.

Grade: D

Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season Part 2

Can’t wait for The Final Season Part B Part 1 Part ∞!!

Grade: A-

Shinmai Renkinjutsushi no Tenpo Keiei

It’s like the Atelier games if they were anime and had no relation to each other. I don’t know, it’s alright, I guess.

Grade: C

Shuumatsu no Harem

After months of delays due to COVID, we finally got this ecchi title, which was a massive disappointment on my end. I like the story in concept from a comedic perspective, but it came off dull for the most part. Even uncensored, I was underwhelmed.

Grade: C-

Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru

She is the biggest anime waifu of the year, and she’s the anime version of the manic pixie girl you see in crappy romcoms from the 00s/10s. That isn’t to say I didn’t like it. I liked the relationship and the Marin girl for what they were, even if it is absolutely dumb in concept.

Grade: B-

Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru

Think of Takagi-san without the chemistry between our two leads, and the comedy isn’t as great. It’s basically the bargain store version of it. It’s serviceable.

Grade: C+

Spy x Family

I, too, gave in to the hype and loved the characters as much as everyone else. Anya-chan has the best facial reactions of any character in recent memory.

Grade: A-

Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu

Imagine if Realist Hero had characters you actually cared about. Okay, not all of them. But the two leads carry this anime by far.

Grade: B-

Tensei shitara Ken deshita

The main girl was the only thing that kept me through it. Nothing else, to be honest.

Grade: C-

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! Double

I wasn’t quite on board with Uzaki-Chan in the previous season, but now it clicked for me in this one.

Grade: B-

Vanitas no Karte Part 2

Bishounen vampires, hell yeah!!

Grade: B+

Ya Boy Kongming!

This had the best OP song of the year, hands down. catJAM

Grade: A-

Yofukashi no Uta

I feel like I should like this more. For some reason, it never clicked with me. Besides the main girl, everyone else is dry, and the story is serviceable at best.

Grade: C+

Yuusha, Yamemasu

Grade: C-

Anime of the Year!!

Akiba Meido Sensou

This was a huge revelatory experience. Combines the greatness of maids and yakuza into an amalgamation of hilarious comedy and serious drama that work each other perfectly. Every character had a unique personality that made them memorable. It has an atmosphere that you would see in campy b-movies. Sometimes it becomes contrived, but overall, Akiba Meido Sensou fires on all cylinders with its approach to the moe maid archetype.

Grade: A
